How Long Does App Store and Play Store Approval Actually Take?
Launch timelines routinely slip because review time gets underestimated. Here's a realistic view of what to actually expect and plan around in 2026.
Typical Review Timelines
| Platform | Typical Review Time | Factors That Extend It |
|---|---|---|
| Apple App Store | 24-48 hours | New developer accounts, complex apps, sensitive categories |
| Google Play | Few hours to a few days | New developer accounts, policy-sensitive categories |
What Extends Review Time
- First-time submissions from a new developer account generally face more scrutiny
- Apps in sensitive categories (finance, health, children's apps) routinely take longer
- Apps requiring additional information or clarification from reviewers add days to the process
- Rejections requiring fixes and resubmission restart the review clock
Planning Your Launch Timeline Realistically
Build in at least a week of buffer beyond the "typical" review time for your first submission, accounting for the real possibility of at least one rejection requiring a fix and resubmission cycle.
Requesting Expedited Review (Apple)
Apple allows expedited review requests for genuine, specific circumstances — a critical bug fix affecting many users, or a launch tied to a fixed external event. This isn't meant for routine "we're behind schedule" situations and should be used sparingly to remain effective when genuinely needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Google Play review faster than Apple's App Store review?
Generally yes for initial review — Google Play often reviews within hours to a couple of days, while Apple typically takes 24-48 hours but can extend further for complex apps or new developer accounts.
Can I expedite app store review if I have a launch deadline?
Apple offers an expedited review request option for genuine time-sensitive situations (bug fixes, event-tied launches), used sparingly. Google Play doesn't offer a formal expedite option for standard app review.
